England won Group L and marched through the Last 32 against DR Congo 2-1 on 1 July. Tuchel's system is working. Bellingham is at the peak of his powers. Kane has been clinical. And now — the midnight hour at the most legendary stadium in world football.
The Azteca. Mexico 1-1 West Germany (1986 semi). Maradona's Hand of God AND Goal of the Century in the same game (1986 QF). The venue that hosted two World Cup finals. The most attended sporting venue in history. 87,000 expectant Mexicans. Altitude. Noise. Heat. And England.
Key news going into Monday:

The USA have been the tournament's great success story. A 4-1 opening day demolition of Paraguay announced their intentions. A controlled 2-0 win over Australia confirmed their quality. Manager Mauricio Pochettino deliberately rested key players against Turkey (who won 3-2) to keep them fresh for the knockouts.
In the Last 32, a composed 2-0 win over Bosnia in San Francisco showed their maturity. Now Belgium — a veteran European side on their own tournament. Read the USA vs Belgium preview →
🏴 Scotland — Their Story Is Done. What a Story It Was.
Scotland were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup on 24 June when Brazil beat them 3-0 in Miami.
Neymar — making a substitute appearance — scored. Brazil were controlled, powerful, clinical. Scotland gave everything but simply faced the wrong team at the wrong moment in what was already an emotional, draining campaign.
The Tartan Army left Miami singing. As well they might. Scotland qualified for their first World Cup since France 1998. They won Haiti 1-0 in Boston — their first World Cup win in 28 years. They gave Morocco a genuine fight, having what many considered a clear penalty denied. And then they went to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami to face the team that many believe will win this tournament.
The goal they scored in this tournament? Zero. The memories? Priceless. Yes Sir, I Can Boogie will be heard at Scottish football grounds for decades.
