It Has Begun — Day 2 Tournament Recap

England impressed in Orlando. The Azteca roared on Day 1. Three matches played today. Here is everything that happened — and what England fans needed to know before Tuesday night in Dallas.

The 2026 World Cup is no longer a countdown. The tournament is live, 12 nations have already played, and the world's largest football competition is firmly, unmistakably under way. England kick off their campaign in five days. This is where we stand.

England: The Warm-Up Is Done — Three Lions Are Ready

Before the tournament proper kicked off, England sent the clearest possible signal of intent in their final warm-up.

England were comfortable, controlled, and impressive throughout. Thomas Tuchel used the match to get minutes into both his rotation squad and his likely first-choice XI — and both groups delivered.

Anthony Gordon was the standout performer of the night. The Newcastle winger started in the rotation XI and turned in the kind of electrifying, direct performance that made the case for more prominent group stage minutes impossible to ignore.

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane clicked in a manner that had not always been evident in warm-ups. Their combinations in the second half were fluid and instinctive. Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg, writing from Inter&Co Stadium, declared Bellingham had delivered "a complete performance" and should be a certainty to start against Croatia on Tuesday.

Tuchel's verdict post-match: "I wished for that. I wished for exactly this kind of performance — controlled, clear in what we are doing, and the players showed the commitment I wanted to see. Now we go to Dallas."

The squad departed Orlando on Thursday for base camp. England play Croatia on Tuesday 17 June at AT&T Stadium, Dallas, 21:00 BST.

Key England News Ahead of the Croatia Opener

Declan Rice named vice-captain. Tuchel confirmed last week that Rice will serve as Harry Kane's deputy as tournament vice-captain. The Arsenal midfielder — described by teammates as the heartbeat of the camp — now carries formal leadership responsibilities alongside his key role as the team's midfield anchor.

Bukayo Saka is managing an achilles issue. Tuchel confirmed this week that Saka is "playing through the pain barrier" and must be carefully managed during the group stage. He is expected to start against Croatia but will be monitored closely between games. England's medical staff are working around the clock to keep him at full fitness.

Marc Guehi could start on the bench. Reports from camp suggest Tuchel is still weighing his central defensive options for Tuesday. Guehi was expected to partner John Stones as the first-choice pairing, but some indications suggest Tuchel may start differently. He is unlikely to reveal his hand before the team sheet is announced.

Jude Bellingham has spoken about Euro 2024. In a revealing interview published today, Bellingham admitted England got "things wrong off the pitch" at Euro 2024. He declined to elaborate but the message was clear — the dressing room culture under Tuchel is fundamentally different, and the players have bought in completely.

"Nobody should underestimate what Tuchel can do with England." Those are the words of USWNT and Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes, writing for The Guardian today. The sentiment is shared across football circles: England arrive at this tournament with a structure, a tactical identity, and a sense of purpose that was absent in recent years.

Tournament Results So Far

Day 1 — Thursday 11 June 2026

🇲🇽 Mexico 2-0 South Africa 🇿🇦

Group A · Estadio Azteca, Mexico City

The tournament opened with theatre. The legendary Estadio Azteca — hosting its third World Cup, the only venue in the world to have done so — was full, loud, and electric. An opening ceremony featuring Shakira and Burna Boy preceded kick-off, with a production that drew warm reviews for its blend of Mexican cultural heritage and global music.

Mexico won 2-0 through Raúl Jiménez and a second-half strike to send the Azteca into raptures. The home crowd's noise reportedly shook the concrete. South Africa gave a reasonable account but were underpowered at this level. Mexico's win was deserved and set the Azteca alight in the way the tournament's organisers had always hoped.

Guardian reviewer: "Entertaining, even educational — Mexico's curtain-raiser delivers."

Group A after Day 1:

Day 2 — Friday 12 June 2026

Three matches today, all dramatic in their own way.

🇰🇷 South Korea 2-1 Czech Republic 🇨🇿

Group A · Second match

South Korea came from behind to win in a game that produced some early tournament drama. Czech Republic led but the South Koreans equalised and then scored a winner to claim all three points and go joint-top of Group A with Mexico. Oh Hyeon-gyu was the goalscoring hero for South Korea.

There was controversy around stadium logistics — FIFA drew criticism when it emerged that large numbers of fans were on concourses and missing portions of play because of queuing issues. FIFA attributed this to fans not being in their seats, but supporters pushed back.

🇨🇦 Canada 1-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦

Group B · BMO Field, Toronto

Canada's first-ever World Cup point — and it came with ceremony. BMO Field in Toronto staged a separate opening event for the Canada matches, with packed stands and a charged atmosphere. Canada fell behind but Cyle Larin came off the bench to score a 78th-minute equaliser and send the home crowd wild.

The match also produced controversy: BBC pundits Wayne Rooney and former referee Darren Cann disagreed loudly over whether Bosnia-Herzegovina's player should have been sent off in the second half — Rooney arguing it was a "clear red", Cann maintaining it was a fair challenge. The debate dominated post-match coverage.

Thomas Partey denied entry to Canada: In a significant blow for Ghana (who play Panama in Group L on the same day England face Croatia), midfielder Thomas Partey was refused entry to Canada and will miss the team's opener in Toronto. Partey, one of Ghana's most important players, had his visa application refused. No official reason has been given.

🇺🇸 USA 4-1 Paraguay 🇵🇾

Group D · SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles

The co-hosts USA got their campaign under way at the spectacular SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. A star-studded opening ceremony at SoFi — featuring Katy Perry, Future and Tyla — preceded the match as part of the wider tournament's dual opening event across Mexico City and Los Angeles.

The USA won 4-1 to claim Group D's first three points, sending a packed SoFi Stadium into celebration. The American public's engagement with football has been a talking point throughout the build-up, and today's crowd answered those questions with noise and colour.

There was frustration about Fox Sports' decision to run full-screen advertisements during the mandatory hydration breaks introduced for the first time at this tournament — a decision that drew widespread criticism from US fans who described it as "absolute nonsense."
